Explanation of Codes and Labels

Code Design:

Each person has a letter and number descriptor.

The letter is the generation (thus A represents the first generation and G represents the seventh).
The first generation is James Edward Maule; the second is the one for his parents, etc.

The number is the ancestor's position within the generation.

Even numbers are assigned to females.
Odd numbers are assigned to males
The number for a mother equals the child's number multiplied by 2
The number for a father equals the child's number multiplied by 2, and then reduced by 1.
The number for a father's child equals the father's number increased by 1 and then divided by 2.
The number for a mother's child equals the mother's number divided by 2.

Examples:
C4 is the mother of B2.
The parents of C4 are D7 and D8.
The father of H12 is I23.
The child of J44 (a mother) is I22.
Labels:
The codes are helpful, but you can navigate this ahnentafel by using the icons:

Click on the icon to jump up a generation to a person's parents.
The icon means just that, so there's no place to jump.
Click on the icon to jump down a generation to a couple's child.
The icon is a temporary roadblock. Please be patient.

Why I do this

I find it difficult to travel through an ahnentafel that numbers individuals consecutively. Quickly, who is the father of #235 in an ahnentafel that numbers the first person as 1, the parents as 2 and 3, the grandparents as 4 through 7, etc.? Who is the child of #784? True, there are complex mathematical formulas that one can apply, but since I don't like numbers.....
I've even seen ahnentafels in which numbers are assigned consecutively to known ancestors. Not only does this make it impossible to apply a formula to determine who is the child of #8733 or the parents of #40994, it also creates the need for number interlineation, creating individuals with numbers such as #456c or, worse yet, #6983.3(a)-1. When it starts to look like the Internal Revenue Code, I get frightened. And confused.
I've tried the "scrolling around" routine, but that also gets difficult. An ahnentafel with, say, 350 names in a generation, some of which are the same, presents the challenge of deciding which of the 6 persons in the next generation with the same surname are the parents of the particular individual of interest to me. Since most ahnentafels contain very little descriptive information (probably another "genealogy rule" that outlaw me has just broken), navigation often is frustrating.
So what you see on this page isn't designed to annoy you. It's an attempt to make genealogical research a bit easier and more productive. I hope you find it worthwhile.

Generation size:

The total number of persons in a generation equals 2 raised to a power that is that generation's
letter converted to a number and reduced by 1. In other words, convert the generation letter to its
number, subtract 1, and then raise 2 to that power. This computation counts "duplicate" ancestors as
many times as they appear.

Example: In generation E, there are 16 individuals. E equals 5, reduced by 1 it is 4, and 2
to the 4th power is 16 (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 16). Similarly, in generation G, there are 64 individuals. G equals
7, reduced by 1 it is 6, and 2 to the 6th power is 64 (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64). (I know, I know, it looks
like a tax return worksheet. But relax, nobody's going to audit you.)
