HICKEY Peter
Birth: 1806 Ireland
Death: 26 Aug 1857 Gettysburg, Pa.
Notes
None of them can be found in 1860 in Phila. What of Margaret Hickey b Ireland 52,
Martha 14, b Pa in Gettysburg? Cannot find any of the others in 1860.
Found them in 1850 in Gettysburg, Peter Hickey, 44 b Ireland, wheel maker, Margaret,
40, b Ireland, Mary 15 b NJ, James 13 b NJ, Margaret 11, b Pa, Ellen 9, b Pa, Martha
7, b PA, John Gibbons, 37, b Ireland, wheel maker. Mary Gibbons 64, b Ireland. My
guess is that this Peter is a brother of Michael (hence the Peter son of Michael,
explains the James... hmmm) [ and considering that John Gwens/Givens and Mary
Gwens/Givens are with Michael Hickey in 1860....] But this James must be the one for
whom there is a death record in Phila. Can't find them in 1840 (the one in Kensington
is also in Kensington in 1850).
Immigration record: 29 Jul 1834, on the Hector, arriving in NY, Peter Hickey age 28,
carpenter (so b c 1806), Margaret age 26.
1840 census, in Gettysburg, under Peter Hickey (or Heckey) is 1 male under 5, 1 male
20 through 29, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5 to 9, 1 female 20 through 29, 1 female 60
through 69. This would be, respectively, James, Peter, Margaret, Mary Anne,
Margaret, and Mary Gibbons.
So when did the Mary Gibbons, 64, b Ireland (so b 1785) arrive?
A Mary Gibbins arr 7 Aug 1834 in NY on the Equator, age 52 (b 1781), servant, no
others of that name with her. No other Mary Gibbons entries are a match.
And when did John Gibbons (b 1812/3), presumably brother of Mary Ann and Margaret
(wives of Michael and Peter Hickey, respectively) arrive? Cannot find any matches.
Cannot find his death. Is he the John Gibbons in Phila Ward 24, in 1870, only person
in household, age 57 (b 1812), blacksmith? This is in West Phila.
In 1840, a Peter Heckey is in Gettysburg (recall that a James Hecky shows up in
1860 in Philadelphia, possibly our James Hickey missing from the 1860 census). There
is one male under 5 (James), one male 20-30 (Peter), one female under 5,
one female 5-10, one female 20-30, and one female 60-70.
My theory: this Peter is the older brother of Michael, and so James Hickey, the witness
at the wedding, is Maurice's cousin.
news.google.com 29 Aug 1932 Gettysburg Times has column of events 75 years ago.
It includes "Died . . . On Wednesday evening last, Mr. Peter Hickey, of this borough,
aged about 50 years." 1932 - 75 = 1857. So Peter b c 1807. This must be "our" Peter,
as it fits with him not being on 1860 census
